Echoes of the Ancestors: A Central Valley Chicana’s Journey to the Motherland

Cultural identity is a spectrum shaped by colonial history, linguistic diversity, and the experience of living between worlds. Growing up in a working-class family, I navigated cultural dualities—English at home, Spanish with my grandparents, and a blend of influences from my community. My Chicana identity emerged in college during an era of anti-immigrant sentiment, sparking a journey of unlearning, reclaiming my Indigenous and African roots, and embracing cultural pride. A long-held dream to connect with my heritage by visiting Mexico City took over two decades to fulfill, but it became a transformative milestone in my ongoing journey of self-discovery and cultural celebration.
